Madame Tussauds Amsterdam is open 7 days a week. The opening times differ per season. Last admission is always one hour before the museum closes.

High season (March 7 till October 31)**  10:00 – 20:00
Low season (November 1 till March 6)  09:30 – 19:00

** On April 27 Kingsday the museum is closed. On May 4 the museum closes 17:30, on May 5 18:30 (liberation of German occupation during WWII)

The museum is located at the famous Dam squire. The picture with the lions and the three crosses show you the entrance of Madame Tussauds-Wax Museum-Amsterdam. The building is located on the middle edge of the Dam squire. The building is easy to recognize by the big wax statue above the entrance, and by the – two  biggest (5 meters/ 18 feet) wax statues of the world – on the front of the building.

Public transport

The easiest way to navigate yourself to the museum is via Amsterdam Central. From Amsterdam Central there are many public transport options. From all the stops on Dam (squire) it will take you a 1 minute walk to the entrance on the Dam (squire). Since the museum is very close to Amsterdam Central Station, many people choice to make a 10 minute walk towards the Dam (squire).

From Amsterdam Central Station:

The history of Madame Tussauds Amsterdam

The very first Madame Tussauds Wax Museum was established at London Baker street Bazaar in 1835 by Marie Grosholtz  (1761-1850). Later on she was better known as Madame Tussaud. How’s did she succeeded and what happened on for hand that the wax museum is such a popular tourist attraction a small 200 years later in Amsterdam? The schedule provides you an overview that answers these questions.

1761 Marie Grosholtz (Madame Tussaud) is born in Strasbourg. This city still exist in France at the boarder of Germany.
1777 One of the first wax figures is is made by Marie. The famous philosopher and author Francois Voltaire.
1780 She becomes an art tutor at the Royal Court in Versailles to the sister of King Louis XVI.
1789 Thanks to her experience she gets the task to start reproducing the heads of guillotine victims. Marie gets this task from Dr Curtius and has to move back to Paris.
1793 During the France Revolution Marie and her mother get imprisoned in Laforce Prison, which is notorious prison of France. In return of her release and to prove her allegiance to the France Revolution she starts making death masks of executed nobles. Not only nobles but also a mask of her former employers the King and Queen!
1794 Luckily the France Revolution ends one year later and Marie inherits Dr Curtius wax exhibition.
1795 Another year later Marie get married with Francois Tussaud, who is a French soldier. They have 3 children. Sadly the first daughter dies after her birth. Their next kid is a boy named Joseph (1798) and third one is Francois (1800).
1802 Together with Marie’s eldest son Joseph she leaves Franse to exhibit her collection of wax figures in England. She starts with the her first exposition in the Lyceum Theatre. She continues with other expositions through England. As well she is travels to Ireland and Scotland. Her traveling and producing wax figures goes on for the next 33 years.
1835 Marie, better known as Madame Tussaud starts with her two sons a base in at The Baker Street Bazaar in London.
1846 The young Punch Magazine (famous of coining the name cartoon between 1840-1850) coins the name Chamber Of Horrors for one of the rooms of Madame Tussaud. This was the room that showed the horror story of the France Revolution.
1850 The year that Madame Tussaud dies and she leaves her entire exposition to Joseph and Francois.
1884 Under control of Joseph Randall Tussauds, the eldest son of Marie’s son Francois, the entire exposition is moved to the current location of Madame Tussauds London.
1925 A fire causes a devastated result for the Madame Tussaud attraction.
1928 It takes 3 years for the restoration, but there is also a added an cinema and restaurant.
1940 With one of the many bombings in London during the World War II Madame Tussauds did get enormously damaged. In total there were 352 wax figures molted, and there was not much left of the cinema.
1972 The world second first Madame Tussauds Opens in Amsterdam in the Peek & Clopenburg building.

Small But Fun

I found the museum rather small. However the kids (11 nad 13) loved taking selfies with the celebs. The statues look like exact copies of the celebs!
